A hat full of wild strawberries

We picked this hat full of wild strawberries Fragaria vesca yesterday afternoon - fiddly to pick but their taste and aroma are incomparable.

It's a big mistake to eat strawberries with ice cream - they need to be warm, to release the full aroma. We had these on porridge this morning. Wonderful!

  2. Back in the day, when I used to go to the wholesale fruit and flower market in Manchester, the scent of strawberries at 5am on a June morning was exquisite. A world that has disappeared

  3. Hi John,

I can't think of any fruit that isn't best eaten when its warm. Chilling might not affect the taste, but it does inhibit the aroma. Yesterday I ate a very ripe apricot that had been warmed by the sun - apricots can be pretty tasteless, but it was fantastic...

  4. Sounds wonderful, uphilldowndale. Whenever I can I buy fruit in markets rather than supermarkets - the stalls always look so attractive and they don't wrap everything in clingfilm. Our local supermarket even wraps small pieces of ginger in clingfilm!
