Drinker lays an egg

I didn’t realise until I’d taken several pictures of this drinker moth that I’d actually disturbed it in the act of laying eggs. In one photograph you can see three eggs that it’s laid on a cock’sfoot grass leaf, in the other you can see it actually laying one of its grey and white oval eggs. You can find some photos of the caterpillar, which is reputed to drink dew, at http://ukmoths.org.uk/search.php?entry=drinker

  1. An exciting thing to witness, and quite by chance.

  2. I wonder if I would have noticed sooner if I'd just been looking at the moth, rather than being preoccupied with photographing it? I'm always amazed at how easy it is to photograph something without really looking at it - which I suppose is why drawing will always be superior to photography if you're interested in really understanding an organism.

  3. I almost missed this Phil. What a great capture of an event most of us would never see or notice.
