Muir burning .....
Muir burning in Teesdale yesterday - burning off the old heather stems so that new shoots develop, to feed grouse. A period of dry weather and light winds produced good conditions for these controlled fires.

A very good photograph. There is something dramatic about fire.
ReplyDeleteThanks Adrian - the upland landscape is covered with fires like this at the moment. i think they're in a hurry to get on with it before nesting birds return.........
ReplyDeleteThanks for the new word muirburn. I wonder who Mr/Ms Muir is/was? Or is it simply a variation of 'moor'?
ReplyDeleteHi Bob, I think it's the Scottish word for moor - details on how its done are at http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/farmingrural/SRDP/RuralPriorities/Options/Muirburnandheatherswiping
