The Scent of New-Mown Hay

Large swathes of North Pennine landscape have been converted into green corduroy over the last week, with hay-making in full swing and long windrows of hay drying in the sunshine. It’s been pretty good haymaking weather. Gone are the days of turning hay by hand but one thing never changes – the fabulous sweet smell of new-mown hay drying in the sun.

  2. I can smell your hay from Redesdale, Phil. There has been quite a lot of haymaking going on around and about up here too.

  3. It does the same with me Keith - not sure if its the dust in the drying hay or chemical compounds in it.

  4. That field in the top photo, near Alston, was particularly sweet smelling and also full of yellow rattle, which had been allowed to run to seed before the kay was cut.
