Unseasonably mild weather tempted this blowfly to buzz around our conservatory. I persuaded it to stay still long enough for a photograph by providing it with a drop of honey......
.. merry Christmas to you too Adrian. There is a sequel to this blog..... the fly got away and, refuelled, it's whizzing round the place like it's turbocharged ..... I'm in the doghouse until I can swat it...
I’m Phil Gates, a botanist at Durham University in the UK and a Guardian Country Diarist. I have been fascinated by natural history since primary school days and with the microscopic world since my parents gave me my first microscope, when I was 12 years old. The magic of making personal discoveries about the natural world has never worn off.

This is a superb image. Have a good Christmas.
Wonderful portrait! Merry Christmas!
This wouldn't have happened a year ago! As you say, much milder in 2011.
We hope that you and Mrs G have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Best wishes, Graeme
