Go with the Flow

Could there be any more relaxing way of whiling away a warm summer's afternoon than to lean over a bridge and watch trout in a stream? With a few sinuous flicks of their tails they expend just enough energy to hold station in the current, waiting for food to be wafted in their direction.
I photographed these beautifully marked brown trout in Middlehope burn, a crystal-clear tributory of the river Wear at Westgate in Weardale.

  2. What a perfect place to spend some time. The fish are so sharply defined, marvellous.

  3. Beautiful. I was carried back to my youth, where my Grandfather had been a marine biologist and the Marine Biological Laboratories in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. My summers were filled with science school and tanks and collecting trips to the marshes wearing the pair of designated water sneakers ( now I'd have a MUCH nicer pair of shoes made just for that!). I can hear the bubbling of the tanks, see starfish stuck to the sides, and smell the salty air... what one image of a beautiful trout can do!

  4. Amazingly clear water Phil, the trout seem to be airborne, flying over the ground.

  9. Hi Rob and Keith, a lucky angle, probably wouldn't have been much clearer if I'd used a polarisng filter (which I don't have), but I guess it might have intensified the colours..
