Last summer large numbers of silver Y moths arrived at around the same time as the spectacular influx of painted lady butterflies. Haven't seen any painted ladies this year and only a modest number of silver Y moths, but those that I have seen along the Durham coast have been irresistibly drawn to clover flowers - easily probed for nectar with that long proboscis.
I've seen a few of these around recently. Had to look up the name. Nice shot Phil
ReplyDeleteHi Keith, they hardly ever settle do they? They must feed to refuel constantly...
ReplyDeleteI had one in my garden two nights ago, Phil, feeding on the cranesbill. It was hovering a lot then settling on the flower to feed, so it must have been using a lot of energy.
ReplyDeleteSometimes they seem to turn up in large numbers, Emma. I think they breed here and produce another generation in autumn..
