Snail

We found this delightful little snail, just 16mm. long, on  a dead tree in Thorsgill woods in Teesdale recently.

It's called Clausilia dubia, according to the excellent  Field Studies Council ID guide for land snails.

  1. What a great find. This one looks to be left hand threaded and not right hand like other snails. I don't suppose that snails are threaded but I can't think of another word.

    1. I think it's the first sinistral snail I've ever found, Adrian!

  2. I have never seen such a long shell. Very different from that which we usually see.

  3. The African snails which surface occasionally in my garden seem to be a great delicacy for the Greater Coucal. The bird never damages the shell.
